Community forest management (CFM) is promoted as a strategy to reach multiple development outcomes including the sustainable use of resources, conservation, poverty alleviation, and social equity through devolution rights forest-dependent communities. Developing effective equitable strategies promote CFM requires consensus on its goals approaches for reaching those goals. Forest Canopy Gap Distributions in the Southern Peruvian Amazon

Canopy gaps express the time-integrated effects of tree failure and mortality as well as regrowth and succession in tropical forests. Quantifying the size and spatial distribution of canopy gaps is requisite to modeling forest functional processes ranging from carbon fluxes to species interactions and biological diversity. Using high-resolution airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), we m...

Effects of Protected Areas on Forest Cover Change and Local Communities: Evidence from the Peruvian Amazon

Protected areas are a cornerstone of forest conservation in developing countries. Yet we know little about their effects on forest cover change or the socioeconomic status of local communities, and even less about the relationship between these effects. This paper assesses whether “win-win” scenarios are possible—that is, whether protected areas can both stem forest cover change and alleviate p...
